Filed under: Azul — Wilmar Perez @ 2:44 pm

Filed under: Pensamientos — Wilmar Perez @ 7:49 pm

Tensions to challenge the three-world order

The Second World War shaped the global political order of the second half of the XX century. Owing to the balance of powers that led to the defeat of the Japanese and the Germans, the World was led to a polarization of two main blocks: the capitalists and the communists. However, even though that was the intended reordering wanted by the two main superpowers: the United States and the Soviet Union; there was a further fractioning with sometimes subtle cracks but sometimes with deep divisions inside each particular fraction (Tignor, et al., 2011, p. 779). For the leading powers, the need to maintain their dominant position was the common trail that led to the tacit organization of the world into three blocks: the First World let by the United States under the capitalism doctrine; the Second World directed by the Soviet Union and their communism agenda and, finally, the Third World composed by African, Asian and Latin American countries; the latter being pull by the First and Second world to join their vision and political agenda in the new ordering of the world. The balance of global wealth and power was maintained for several decades, however different events exposed vulnerabilities not only inside them but also in the framework that hold together the doctrine of world dominance by a narrow set of policies (Wikipedia, 2012). Sources and responses to imperial expansion around the world from 1860 to 1914

The nineteenth century was characterized for the consolidation and expansion of dominant empires around the world: European powers granted themselves possession over the African and Middle East territories; the United States took over the American territory and seized control over some former Spanish colonies on the Caribbean and South Asia; Japan, Russia and China took control over the Asian landscape. These movements and shifting of powers had strong consequences not only in the geopolitical and economic shape of the globe but it also deeply affected the life of millions of people that were being ruled by new regimes and had to forcibly adapt to new realities according to the struggle of foreign powers .

The Industrial Revolution and its role in the development of Global Commerce

It is nowadays just normal to shop fruits from South America, sweets from Europe and tea from china at the local supermarket in a Thursday’s evening rush. It is taken for granted, especially in rich societies, that those goods are always available. People even get picky about them and browse around for different qualities, a wider choice of origins or, simply, price. However, the easy access to world goods and merchandise was not always the case. One might believe that distances and transportation were the main factors in the previous unavailability of large supplies of foreign products; and indeed it played an important role, however world wide availability of merchandise was triggered by several key factors that together created the “ecosystem” of global trade in use today.

The Enlightenment and the boundaries of vision

The Enlightenment was a cultural movement that first appeared in Europe in the XVIII century as a consequence of several factors but mainly because of the eagerness of the European literate middle class to reason for themselves  (Wikipedia, 2012). After a century of crisis people started to look for alternative ways of thinking and alternative ways of development that, also, encompassed the expansion of literacy and the decline of religious prosecution (Tignor, et al., 2011, p. 542). The raising of the Enlightenment was, in part, possible because of the possibility given by the new tea and coffee houses as places to gather and discuss about the problems of the time (Tignor, et al., 2011, p. 542). It can be said that this cultural flowering was truly a product of its time.

Global integration to bring us appart

At the beginning of the seventeenth century the world had a different shape, in terms of global relationships between nations, compared to what it was just two hundred years before. The main cause being the exponential increment in global trading, this, in turn, was accelerated by the availability of international tradable goods: furs, sugar, tobacco, coffee and tea, among others . These goods, as well as others stimulants and preciosities, could be now bought thanks to the constant supply of silver and gold that was being shipped out from the Americas to Europe and Asia.

Plagues and development

The thirteenth and fourteenth centuries were specially challenging for the social orders in Afro-Eurasia. By then, a series of commercial paths among them had been created, facilitating the interchange of goods and cultural ideas across the known territories. With the Mongol invasions and the subsequent spread of the series of plagues that spanned for more than a century, societies were faced to enemies that, in the case of the plagues, have never been seen before, for that enemy was “invisible” and, thereafter, mainly in Europe, was attributed to a divine character .
